Preview: Scottish Chamber Orchestra brings Stauss and Mendelssohn to Duns.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra returns to Duns Volunteer Hall on Friday, May 27, with a concert brimming with fantasies, myths, dance and comedy.

The concert will feature two SCO Principal Players as soloists: clarinet player Maximiliano Martín and bassoon player Peter Whelan, performing Strauss’ entertaining depiction of a strange duet between a dancing princess and a cavorting bear, the Duet Concertino.

Spanish conductor Pablo González bookends the concert with two works by the ever-popular composer Mendelssohn. The first, Mendelssohn’s concert overture to a legendary mermaid-like water sprite, The Fair Melusine, the composer considered to be the ‘most intimate’ thing he ever produced.

Mendelssohn’s energetic First Symphony closes the concert with bristling drama and jaw-dropping creative energy.
