One plus four in Melrose

Melrose Music Society will host a programme of music by Beethoven, Elgar and Shostakovitch in Melrose Parish Church Hall at 7.30pm on Friday February 12.

The Dante String Quartet, comprising Krysia Osostowicz, violin, Oscar Perks, violin, Yuko Inoue, viola and Richard Jenkinson, cello, was winner of the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award for chamber music in 2007 and the BBC Music Magazine Award in 2008.

Daniel Tong, pianist, also from Cornwall, has played at venues and festivals throughout the UK and further afield. His interpretation of Schubert was described by Gramophone as ‘extraordinarily sympathetic’.

The concert commences with Beethoven’s String Quartet Opus 18 No 3 in D major, described by the celebrated American musicologist, Michael Steinberg, as ‘the gentlest, most consistently lyrical work (of this opus) until the fourth movement in which Beethoven ‘first explores the idea of shifting the centre of gravity toward the end of a multimovement work’.

Shostakovitch’s five-movement Piano Quintet in C minor, which follows, was written in 1940 for the celebrated Beethoven Quartet and first performed with the composer at the piano. The concert finishes with Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A minor.
