French flavour from one of world's foremost pianists

Music in Peebles welcomes in 2016 in the company of one of today's foremost pianists playing music in which he is unsurpassed.

Pascal Rogé has played in almost every major concert hall in the world and performed with many of the world’s top orchestras and conductors.

He is especially renowned for his interpretations of music from his native France – no other pianist more completely draws the audience in to the distinctive sounds and colours so characteristic of French piano music.

It is an all-French programme that Pascal Rogé will perform in Peebles and fittingly the concert opens with a selection of pieces by Erik Satie, whose 150th anniversary is celebrated in 2016. The famous Gymnopédie No.1 opens the concert, before the eccentrically-titled ‘Sketches and provocations of a portly wooden fellow’. Two of the well-known Gnossiennes and the sentimental café song ‘Je te veux’ complete this set.

Next up will be Ravel’s Sonatine, an homage to classical elegance; followed by Poulenc’s ‘Les Soirées de Nazelles’.

No programme of French music would be complete without the supreme master of Impressionism, Claude Debussy, and his first book of Préludes forms the concert’s second half. This set of twelve miniature masterpieces includes such celebrated gems as ‘The girl with the flaxen hair’ and ‘La cathédrale engloutie’ (‘The submerged cathedral’).

In the words of The Scotsman “…the chance to hear Pascal Rogé play the music that makes him tick is an opportunity not to be missed.”
