Botanist's exhibition is a marriage of his passions

Titled “A Plant World on Paper”, the exhibition will run from May 7 to June 19 and feature a beautiful array of paintings of plants, flowers, gardens and vegetables.

Initially a botanical researcher, David wrote his first book whilst restoring a Georgian garden and house. He has penned a dozen more books on plants, gardens and gardeners, as well as regular columns for newspapers including The Sunday Times and The Scotsman.

Now, after one busy career, he has returned to an earlier passion: painting. He has already shown pictures at several Scottish Galleries, and, so far, one in London.

Dr Stuart said: “After having one of my paintings shortlisted by London’s Royal Academy Summer Show, I was invited to produce a show for Old Gala House. I have been based in the Borders for the last 25 years so having an exhibition devoted to my work for my fellow Borderers to enjoy is a splendid opportunity.”

The venue is home to an engaging museum where visitors can discover the story of Old Gala House, its inhabitants and the early development of the town of Galashiels. It features several meeting rooms and exhibition spaces and will also play host to a lively temporary events programme throughout the coming year.”

Old Gala House is open from April to September, Tuesday – Saturday from 10am-4pm. In July and August it also opens on Mondays and Saturdays 10am-4pm and on Sundays from 2pm-4pm.

A Plant World on Paper runs from May 7 to June 19. Admission is free and all works on display are available to purchase.
