East of Scotland Football League officials have now declared the current season null and void after a vote of member clubs yesterday, April 11.

Almost three-quarters of those that voted, 29, came out in favour of scrapping the season, with only 11 wanting to restart it.

That means the Hawick and Peebles sides, both in the league’s first division conference B, along with Eyemouth United, and Coldstream, in conference A, can now start planning for next season rather than remaining in limbo any longer.

Next season is now due to get under way in three months’ time.

Play had been stopped since Monday, January 11, as part of efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus and looked unlikely to be able to resume without testing for the disease before mid-May.

League secretary David Baxter said: “The outcome of the vote on season 2020-2021 has been confirmed. Virtually three-quarters of clubs prefer to call an end to what's been a very challenging campaign.

“It's now to be hoped something approaching normality prevails by July 17, when 2021-22's set to start.”
