Tetrathlon tester for Martin

Competing in the under-21 age group, the 15-year-old ended up in seventh spot in the multi-discipline event which involves swimming, shooting, horse riding and running.

One of the youngest competitors in the field of more than 50, the teenager started off with a personal best in the swimming phase.

Nerves slightly got the better of him in the shooting section and at the end of the first day he was lying 16th overall.

But the second day proved to be more successful. On board his thoroughbred horse Spider, Smith completed the most technical riding course he had faced in the second fastest time of the day.

A 2,000m run completed the competition and again Smith achieved another PB to pull himself inside the top 10.

At the beginning of the month, the teenager was selected for the Scottish boys’ team at the open regional tethrathlon.

This was Scotland’s first time fielding a squad in the contest since 2009 and Smith was the youngest member of the team, but enjoyed a great weekend.

As well as running and swimming personal best times, he won the shooting competition to finish just outside the individual top 10 places, while Scotland ended up in fourth.
