The 26 year-old has not raced in the British leagues before and joins the Bandits on the recommendation of his fellow countryman, and Grand Prix star Majej Zagar.

Berwick were forced into a change of tact following the visa row which erupted a fortnight ago which could have an implication on a number of Australian and American riders racing in the UK.

The Borderers had already lined up Aussie teenager Jake Allen, but as there was also a conflict over his starting average, which could have taken the team over the 42.5 limit for Premier League teams, Berwick had to think out of the box.

“We had 5.66 points to play with,” said co-promoter Dennis McCleary, “and there were a few options open to us, but in the end we decided to go with a new face, someone who will become a club asset when he completes the required number of meetings.

“We appreciate British speedway, and indeed the whole UK set up, will be new to him - he currently speaks very little English - but he certainly should adapt to our big circuit.”

Voldrih has already raced in the FIM GP Challenge qualifiers, European Championship rounds, Italian Championships as well as in his own country and in open events in Slovakia, Latvia, Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

He will be based in Tweedmouth throughout the season and his bikes will be transported to the UK shortly.
