Jorgensen set for busy season after confirming Polish contract

The Swede, who will start out the season wearing the Bandits’ number one race jacket, will also line up for Krosno in the Polish second division when his Berwick commitments allow.

A statement from the Bandits said: “Thomas assures us his signing for the ‘Wolves’ of Krosno will not affect his riding for Berwick at places such as Glasgow, Newcastle or other Premie League Sunday circuits, but that he does hope to further his career by testing himself in the robust second tier of Polish racing.”

And the 20 year-old will be in familiar company, for also included in the Krosno squad are former Bandits Claus Vissing) also from Sweden) and the home-based Marcin Rempala.

Jorgensen is one of two Berwick riders - the other is skipper Kevin Doolan - who has been invited to ride in the season-opening BEN Fund Bonanza meeting, which is being held at King’s Lynn on Saturday, March 12.

“Some clubs might not be represented at all in this prestige event,” commented co-promoter Dennis McCleary.

“Having not one but two Bandits on parade at the Adrian Flux Arena next month is something to brag about, showing that our club is held in pretty high regard these days by speedway’s upper classes.

“In fact, we’ll have a third representative at the Bonanza - our centre green presenter, Dick Barrie has also been invited to augment the Stars’ regular presentation team that night, and will doubtless be bouncing about on the infield, raising funds at the same time as raising the roof!”

Doolan, who recently returned from a holiday in his homeland, Australia, is now back in his UK base at Sheffield and is building up his fitness levels with some regular outings on his mountain bike.

“I’ll be back in the workshop pretty soon, getting bikes ready for the new season,” he said.

“Plenty of bits and bobs have been ordered, and I’m just waiting on delivery, and some warmer evenings, to make working in the shed a bit more bearable!”

Another Bandit who has accepted an early season booking is Liam Carr, who will ride for a Coventry select side at Glasgow on Easter Sunday.

Carr, who is from Berwick, recently revealed that he is spendiong over £4000 on a new engine as he prepares for his assault on the PL with his home-town club in 2016.

He will also ride for Coventry Storm in the National League when commitments allow, which is how he has come to be invited to ride at Ashfield in their season-opener.

Meanwhile, former captain Matty Wethers says he is looking forward to his return to Shielfield Park after a season away at Workington.

Aussie Wethers, who lives in West Lothian, is returning on a very handy average, which allows him to start out the season at reserve, where he will be partnering Carr.

And he admits: “I’m so happy to be back at Berwick. I think we have a really solid, very competitive team, and I’m hoping we can put together some handy reults.”

Team manager Scott Courtney says: “Matty is a 100% racer from tapes to the flag, and starting off at reserve means I can be totally confident that he’ll be banging in consistent performances, home and away, right from the off.”
