Bandits to face Comets in Border Trophy

The last speedway action of the season will take place at Shielfield Park on Saturday when Berwick face Workington in a play-off semi-final fixture.

The Bandits will also race against the Comets at Derwent Park on Sunday, but as both sides have already lost home and away to Edinburgh, who have already qualified for the final, it renders the meeting a dead rubber.

To add a little spice the teams will race, on aggregate, for the Border Trophy, which was first competed for over 40 years ago. And the clubs are now looking to make it a regular fixture in the calendar from next season. They have agreed in principle but have yet to confirm the arrangement.

For Saturday’s home meeting, Berwick will be without Matej Kus, who will be competing in the national championships in the Czech Republic the same night.

But he will jump straight on a plane and fly into Edinburgh for Sunday’s return at Derwent Park, which starts at 7.30pm.

For that meeting Kus will don the Bandits’ number one race jacket for the first time this season, having gone to the top of the team’s averages.

His absence from the home meeting means Berwick will either bring in a guest or use rider replacement.

Berwick also hope to welcome back Steen Jensen to the side after he missed the club’s last meeting through illness.

The Dane, who had picked up a groin injury, was reported to be suffering from a blood virus. He returned home to recuperate, but now says he is fit and ready to race again.

Last weekend, Berwick’s David Bellego competed in the final of the European U21 Championship at Rybnik in Poland, where he finished sixth.

And on Saturday he competed in the final round of the World U21 Championship at Pardubice in the Czech Republic where he scored seven points, winning the last of his five races.

The meeting was won by Kacper Gomolski of Poland on 13 points.

Mikkel Michelsen of Denmark beat Piotr Pawlicki of Poland in a Run Off for second place on the day after they both scored 12 points, but Pawlicki had the satisfaction of being crowned World U21 champion.

* Berwick also have one outstanding League Cup fixture to race - away to Glasgow - and this will be staged at Ashfield on Sunday, October 19 at 3.30pm.

The club will then bring the curtain down on their successful season - they finished fourth in the final Premier League table - by staging their traditional end-of-season dance in the Black and Gold on Friday, October 24.

Meanwhile, the Berwick promotion are continually looking at ways to improve their regular Saturday night presentation and are open to suggestions from fans as to how this might be achieved.

Anyone with any ideas is invited to e-mail the club at [email protected] - they promise to look at every suggestion.
