YM in debut win

Hawick YM 18

Kirkcaldy 6

REDSKIN reports from Mansfield Haugh

HAWICK YM notched a fine win against a Kirkcaldy side which finished fourth in Division Three last season.

The monsoon rain of early morning had settled down to a steady drizzle by the time the game kicked off, but the wet ball made life difficult for both sides.

Liam Lawrence outflanked the Kirkcaldy defence to score a fine team try, which Chris Ritson converted, before adding a penalty.

Matty Douglas came on for Liam Lawrence, who had picked up a sore ankle, and shortly before half-time, Douglas scored a great try as Dean McCracken made a good break and put in great kick which Douglas tapped over the line to dive on the ball.

Sitting 15-0 down at the break, it was a different Kirkcaldy side that came out for the second half, and the Fifers scored two penalties.

Ritson, who was having good day with the boot, added another three points with a relatively straightforward penalty, and YM held out.
