Paul Hanlon’s reign as Hawick YM coach got off to a disappointing Championship B start with a six-try defeat to Aberdeenshire.

Newly promoted from Caledonia One, Aberdeenshire were dominant throughout, grabbing three tries in both halves.

Barney Henderson opened the scoring for the north-east side in wet conditions at Woodside Sports Complex with a five-pointer, before the YM struck back with a penalty from Matty Douglas.

Debutant Richard Murdoch stretched the hosts’ lead soon after with another try before Gavin Cunningham added another three points.

Another try by Murdoch just before half time all but sealed the victory for Aberdeenshire.

Steven Cook, Joe Lawson and a further try meant Aberdeenshire led 39-3, but Shaun Desport and Sam Bandeen scored late tries to add some respectability to the final result.
