The men who would be Kings kick off

Borders rugby is preparing to step up a pace this weekend as this year’s AM.PM Event Catering Kings of the Sevens tournament kicks into action at Netherdale.

For supporters, 10 tournaments of high octane rugby in seven weeks will provide the draw as the local seven-a-side specialists battle against the top city sides and guest teams for the ultimate honours.

And, while Melrose may have been flying high in the Premiership, they may be in danger of losing their crown in the abbreviated game if some of the other Borders sides live up to their potential.

Gala were second in last year’s tournament and are confident of getting off to a good start at their home event on Sunday, while former ’Rose star Andrew Skeen may just give Kelso the boost they need to revive their sevens skills.
