Teries storm first half

Peebles 7

Hawick 37

A FOUR-try first-half blitz ensured Hawick picked up their second Border Cup win against struggling Peebles.

Any hopes Peebles coach Gerry McGuinness had of getting one over his former team, who controversially sacked him last year, were washed away in the driving rain as Hawick went in 32-0 up at half-time.

The match was just a minute old when Gary Johnstone and Graham Hogg combined, setting up Greg Cottrell to score between the posts.

Neil Renwick converted and kicked over two further penalties before Rory Hutton skilfully set up Johnstone for the second try.

Renwick made it 20-0 before captain Bruce McNeil scored Hawick’s third try in the 20th minute, which full back Renwick again converted.

There was little respite for Peebles as Hutton sprinted home from halfway after intercepting a home pass.

A sin-binning for Sean Linton just before the interval was the only blip for Hawick coach Phil Leck in the first half, but the second period was a more even affair.

Terrible conditions made it hard for either team to find a way to the tryline, but on 75 minutes Steven Anderson burst over in the left hand corner.

The hosts finally got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute when Matt Carryer notched five points, with Garry Dodds adding the conversion.
