Selkirk undone by Kelso’s Cooper

Kelso 27

Selkirk 24

New Kelso coach Darren Cunningham enjoyed a winning National League start over Selkirk thanks to a penalty kick by Ben Cooper in the fifth minute of injury time.

Michael McVie and Cooper traded penalties early on to make the score 6-6 before Selkirk hooker Jamie Bett capitalised on a charged-down clearance kick by Cooper to touch down.

Cooper made amends with another penalty and Kelso went ahead after the same player’s delightful grubber kick saw Frankie Robson outpace the defence.

Robson added another try after an Andy Tait chip-through as the Tweedsiders led 24-16 at the break.

Selkirk responded well and after a McVie penalty, Fraser Harkness set up Michael Davies to score in the corner and level the scores at 24-all with 13 minutes left.

McVie missed a long-range penalty attempt before Kelso kept the ball alive and forced the Souters into an infringement to allow Cooper to win the match.
