Hawick YM 31
NATIONAL DIVISION TWO
HUNGRY for action after their extended break, the Redskins made the journey to Inverness and returned with the scalp of SRU club of the month Highland.
Playing in a howling gale and sticky underfoot conditions, YM drew first blood when Lee Armstrong notched a penalty and added another following a spell of concentrated pressure on the Highland line. The home side did finally break into the YM half, where they were awarded a penalty which they decided to kick to touch.
A series of pick and drives from the hosts followed, but great defence by YM kept them out.
The YM touchdown finally came via captain Billy Lilly who plunged over the line from two yards to put the Teries firmly in the driving seat. Armstrong converted and added a penalty, but an infringement from Stephen Hill on the stroke of half-time saw the YM forward sin-binned and Stuart Mackintosh slotted the resulting penalty to take the interval score to 3-16.
Now playing into the wind with a man short, many in the YM ranks wondered if a 13-point lead would be enough, but those doubts were soon laid to rest.
Shaun Desport stormed in for a try before Anderson added his fourth penalty.
YM’s third and final try came shortly after with man-of-the-match Lewis Mallin collecting a bouncing ball to go in under the posts.
The game fizzled out in the final quarter as Hawick failed to bag the bonus point – the only score coming from Richard Sim with a consolation try for Highland.
