GALA welcomed Biggar to Netherdale on Sunday on what can only be described as a heavy surface.

In the first half, GRT played with the wind and although the conditions were not conducive to the champagne rugby normally associated with the side, the ball was kept in hand to good effect.

A strong Red Triangle scrum resulted in quick ball to the centre, where Rory Brand sliced through the defence to open the scoring. Matt Lochrie added the extras.

Repeated rucking up the left wing then released Neil Turnbull to crash over the line. Again the left wing was the route back to the visitors’ half and Biggar were penalised for an infringement at the breakdown.

The Goliath that is Andy Dewar took the ball from a quick tap by Jack Halls and crashed over with the grace of a rampaging gorilla, Brand converting.

The second half started with the same purpose and commitment from both teams and a solo effort by Brand resulted in a score which he went on to convert.

GRT’s man of the match Tom Smith showed up both in the dominant front row and in the loose.

The visitors went on to use the elements to good effect and pulled two unconverted tries back before Brand completed his hat-trick and added the extras for 21 points on the day.
