Peebles simply outclassed by silky Souters

Peebles 17

Selkirk 50

STUART PATON reports from The Gytes

FRIDAY at the Gytes saw the end of Premiership 1 action and the beginning of Premier 2 for Selkirk.

And, fittingly, the Souters went down fighting.

Peebles started with a few youngsters on show while their visitors were not at full strength either, with the most noticeable absentee being Fraser Harkness who was been called up for Scotland 7s duties.

Peebles notched a penalty through Neil Warnock in the early stages before Selkirk swept forward with some fine rucking and passing, only for a try to be disallowed. A scrum five was awarded and Darren Clapperton swept in for David Cassidy to convert. The lead was stretched further when a fine move was ended by a Niall Godsmark try converted by Cassidy.

Then from a retaken scrum, Darren Clapperton nipped in before Scott Forrest sliced through the Peebles defence to score.

Cassidy converted one and the half ended Peebles 3, Selkirk 26.

The Gytes men closed the gap after the restart when Davey Paton romped in and Warnock converted. But Cassidy knocked over a penalty for Selkirk followed by a try from Rory Aglen, which was also converted.

Again Peebles came back and from a rolling maul an unidentified Peebles player flopped over to claw some way back. Warnock converted and it was 17-36.

What followed thereafter was a display of running rugby by the dominant Souters.

Another converted try followed from Darren Clapperton while Godsmark was able to sweep over again and the conversion by Cassidy swept in off the post to end the scoring.
