No scrums hit Linden hard

Portobello 31

Hawick Linden 19

A controversial decision proved to be the deciding factor.

Just after half-time Portobello withdrew an injured prop and the referee decided to allow a sub who was not a prop to pack down with uncontested scrums. This was a blow to Linden as they had been pushing the Portobello forwards around at will. More galling was the fact for the last two years in National Division Three, a lightweight Linden pack had been pushed from Orkney to Ayr.

The home side dominated the first 30 minutes, running up a 24-point lead without reply.

The visitors replied with tries from Graeme Colville, converted by Steven Beattie, Nathan Murray and Terry Skeet, converted by Gavin Stirling, bringing them back into the game.

From then on, the lack of contested scrums was proving a blessing for Portobello, who assured of their own ball, scored a further try in the second half.
