No prize for Linden effort

Helensburgh 35

Hawick Linden 9

Once again a Linden squad badly affected by call-offs took to the road, this time the long haul to Helensburgh.

The travelling Teries got off to their customary bad start, losing a chargedown try.

Linden responded with a fine run, from deep inside his own territory, by fullback Michael Graham, who was pulled down short of line.

Linden had earlier missed a long-range penalty from Gavin Stirling, and changed tactics, running the next two as they pressured the Helensburgh line.

However, breakouts from Helensburgh led to a converted try and a penalty, before Stirling made amends for his earlier miss by slotting a long-range three-pointer.

The home side replied with a penalty deep into injury time, leaving the Hawick men 20-3 down at the interval.

After the restart, Linden clawed their way back with two Stirling penalties.

Gradually, Helensburgh began to creep back into game and made the visitors pay for their ever-increasing mistakes. Despite having a bit of a makeshift team there was no lack of effort or commitment from Linden.
