Linden on a high

Ross High 24

Hawick Linden 33

HAWICK LINDEN secured their first away win of the season at Tranent, playing some great rugby in testing conditions.

A blustery wind favoured the visitors in the first half and a short pass from Gavin Stirling allowed Craig Smith to slice through to score at the posts. Stirling converted.

Disaster then struck when a Linden pass went to ground and from halfway Ross High hacked on for their winger to score a converted try.

Linden were quick to respond, however, with Craig Russell outrunning the cover to score at the corner. Then, from turnover ball, Smith fended off a would-be tackler and fed Steven Bouglas who powered through.

Four minutes later, Bouglas added his second when he surged over. Stirling converted the latter two tries, but Linden failed to close out the half and two consecutive penalties gave the home side the field position to exert pressure that resulted in their second try to close the gap to 26-12 at half-time.

The second period saw the Royal Blues working hard into the wind, but silly mistakes allowed the home side to continually send them right back to where they started.

With five minutes of normal time remaining Ross High picked from a scrum and their centre scored a converted try to reduce the lead to seven.

From this point the visitors played some great rugby, with the clinching score coming when Colville again linked with Russell for the latter to score, with Stirling slotting the conversion.
