Langholm 3 Berwick 83

BERWICK went on a 13 try demolition job against Langholm at Milntown last Saturday in the RBS Border Shield and are clear at the top of the table with one match remaining.

The visitors played good handling rugby throughout and Langholm had no answer to their power and pace and it could even have been worse as the referee appeared to blow the final whistle with seven minutes remaining.

Langholm went ahead with a penalty goal from Niall Cubbon after six minutes but thereafter Berwick dominated. The halftime score was 3-36 with six tries and three conversions from Berwick and they continued to dominate in the second period.

The Langholm side never gave up, and experienced players such as No8 Steven Nicol caught the eye with the occasion surge. Niall Cubbon and Alasdair Cavers strived to make the odd break, but like the rest of the backs they were mainly confined to a defensive role.

Visitors No 8 Alistair Grieve ran in four deserving tries and fullback Gareth Hill had a try and nine conversions. Other tries came from centre Tom Riddell (2), flanker Alex Frost, scrum half Jamie Patterson, hooker Gareth Black, flyhalf Jack Webster, lock Jamie Young and prop Tom Jackson.

Berwick now head to Caithness for the shield semi-final on March 29.
