Langholm get mauled

RHC Cougars 24

Langholm 18

Langholm suffered a narrow defeat on the road but managed to pick up a bonus point when securing a late penalty goal, writes John Smith.

The powerful home pack’s rolling mauls were key – all four RHC tries came from this ploy – and Langholm had two forwards yellow-carded on separate occasions during these moves.

RHC started with wind advantage on the heavy, wet pitch and Langholm had to soak up considerable pressure.

The home side opened the scoring in the 21st minute when surging over from one of their mauls.

Langholm hit back with a try from fly-half Keith Davidson after a spectacular run.

The big Cougars forwards continued to cause problems and another maul near the line brought a try which was also converted.

Niall Cubbon kicked a fine penalty for Langholm to make it 12-8 at half-time.

Just after the restart Langholm thought winger Alistair Cavers had scored, but the referee judged him to have been held up. The visitors continued to apply pressure and scrum half David Irving darted over from the back of a ruck, Cubbon converting, to put the Milntown side in front.

But they were down to seven in the forwards when RHC capitalised with their third and fourth tries – the latter with six minutes left.

Langholm won a penalty within range, but a quick tap was taken and the chance came to nothing.

Fortunately another penalty chance came as RHC defended desperately and this time Cubbon slotted the kick to get the bonus point.
