Ladies fired up on Tayside

Dundee Ladies 3

Melrose Ladies 72

DESPITE howling winds, Melrose were able to put together some scintillating rugby.

For once in this top league, they had parity of size up front and were able to enjoy the lion’s share of possession, their speedy backs cutting through the home side’s despairing defences.

Dundee never looked like scoring, always doing their utmost to pen Melrose in their own 22, but unable to prevent the several pacy breakouts that put the Borderers 31-3 ahead at half-time.

With the wind behind them it was more of the same in the second half.

The only blackspot was yet another injury to Melrose’s depleted squad as second row Maria Young had to leave the field with a severe concussion.

Melrose scorers were Lauren Harris (5), Gillian Inglis (2), Kirsty Cook, Megan Maciver, Lyndsey Gilchrist, Steff McKenna and Lana Skeldon, who converted her own try. Nicola Halfpenny added five conversions.

Melrose: L. Harris; E. Pate, G. Inglis, K. Cook, L. Whillans; N. Halfpenny, L. Skeldon; J Hall, L. Purves, M. Maciver, M. Young, B. Todd, E. Hackney, L. Gilchrist, S. McKenna. Subs: R. Wood, T. Elms, G. Thomson.
