Hawick survive a second-half Ayr raid

For the second time this season, premier league title challengers Ayr came up short against a Hawick side who have acquired a knack of toppling the top dogs.

In what was a bizarre turn of events, Hawick gained 24 of their points in the opening 15 minutes and managed to survive an intense onslaught to keep hold of their advantage.

The Mansfield men surged into the lead with touchdowns from captain Rory Hutton, Scott McLeod and John Coutts, with Jack Cuthbert adding all three conversions and a penalty.

Ross Curle broke the Ayr deadlock with a try five minutes from the interval and, on the stroke of half-time, the same man notched another, converting both himself, but, with the last kick of the half, Cuthbert slotted a penalty for a 27-14 lead.

Ayr battered the Hawick lines after the break, but all they got for their efforts was a Curle penalty and a Robbie Fergusson try.
