Gala 26 Melrose 21

Booker Border League

GALA broke Melrose hearts once more tonight when edging out the Greenyard’s men in the Booker Border League final at Netherdale.

After dominating the first half George Graham’s outfit found themselves with a fight on their hands as Melrose strove for the honours.

Gala were the first to show their hand after seven minutes when Euan Dods released Gavin Young who blazed a trail into the Melrose 22 before being brought down. Still the Maroons pushed for the line but Melrose received a get out of jail card when Gala were penalised for not releasing. Minutes later it appeared their luck was still in when a Lee Millar penalty bounced back off the post.

There was no such problem with his next effort two minutes later however and the host club were off their marks.

Gala went further ahead on the 20 minute Mark when Grant Somerville seared up the far touch line to score in the corner.

Melrose got their first points on the board shortly afterwards when Joe Helps slotted over a fairly lengthy penalty.

Once again however Gala took control and a jinky run and pass from George Graham sent brother Gary over only to be held up. There was no stopping the Netherdale outfit however and, from the set piece, Gavin Young nipped in at the stand corner. Half time score: Gala 13 Melrose 3.

Melrose came out rejuvenated after the break and threw everything they had at Gala providing some enthralling action for any neutrals in the large midweek crowd.

Graeme Dodds crashed over first with Joe Helps making the conversion. Gala came back and a Millar penalty and drop goal coming either side of a Helps penalty. Desperate to get right back into it however Melrose upped the ante and Fraser Thomson ran in another try to close the gap to a single point.

Gala reacted as expected. By raising the bar again. Russell Anderson run in from close range and Millar converted to stretch the gap with four minutes remaining.

Melrose kept in touch through another Helps penalty but time ran out and it was the host club who celebrated another fine win at Netherdale.
