A sensational Heriot’s comeback saw injury-hit Gala let slip a 21-point lead to succumb to their first defeat of the season.
The small consolation was that the Maroons picked up two points for a losing bonus and the four tries they scored.
Gala have a superb run against Heriot’s, having beaten the Goldenacre side in all four Premiership matches in the last two seasons. It looked as if the run would continue when Gala went 27-6 up just after half-time, with tries from George Graham Jnr, Grant Somerville, Stephen Cairns and Lewis Bertram.
But injuries to back row trio Gary Graham, Ben Murray and Euan Dods, coupled with a yellow card for Alan Emond, sparked the Heriot’s fightback.
They bagged three tries while Emond was off, through Kevin Bryce, Keith Buchan and Liam Steele. With a 21-point lead whittled down to two, Gala had a chance to restore some breathing space, only for substitute Ewan Scott to miss a penalty. But when Heriot’s stand-off Graham Wilson got his penalty chance in the dying minutes, he made no mistake.
