NATIONAL DIVISION ONE
LANGHOLM had to work hard to secure this win over the students at Milntown, writes John Smith.
In the end it was the boot of centre Niall Cubbon that brought the hosts the points with four successful penalties out of six.
The University side, with former Hawick and Scotland forward Ian Barnes in charge, appeared to have been well briefed on Langholm’s recent slow starts.
The students stormed into action and hit the Milntown side with continuous attacks. In a 10-minute opening spell Langholm were under constant threat in their 22, but defended stoutly.
The Langholm scrum was under pressure and they continually lost ball at the breakdown.
Langholm at last made inroads into the visitors’ territory and secured a penalty on the 22m line and virtually straight, which Cubbon slotted with ease. Langholm had the odd period of pressure, but were mostly confined to defence and did well to keep the eager students at bay.
Cubbon kicked another simple penalty and Langholm led 6-0 at the interval.
A few minutes after the restart Cubbon kicked a superb long-range penalty for the home side.
University continued to have a large percentage of territorial advantage, but the Langholm defence never wilted. After 56 minutes Cubbon was on target again with a fine 45m effort.
Langholm had their best period of play in the last 10 minutes and went near to scoring. Cubbon missed a couple of penalties and Keith Davidson was wide with a drop goal attempt.
