Selkirk 24 Hawick 59

With 12 of their squad at a stag party and several others absent due to a variety of reasons Selkirk took to the field at Philiphaugh with a severely weakened team for this Premiership derby game.

And Hawick punished them mercilessly.

Both sides showed spirit in the early stages. A Rory Banks break made the hosts good ground but his reverse pop pass was fumbled and an early chance went begging while, down at the other end young livewire Darcy Graham danced through the home defence before being stopped just short of the line.

It took just 10 minutes for the first try to come and, despite their depleted squad, it was Selkirk who scored it when a good run by James Bett allowed Dashton Wellman to wriggle his way over to touch down for Rory Banks to convert.

Stung into action Hawick didn’t take long to respond, four minutes in fact, Rory Scott burrowing his way over following some good work by his fellow forwards with Lee Armstrong adding the extras.

The game stagnated for a spell as the teams tried to get the measure of each other and it was a good 15 minutes before there were any further attempts to score. When it did come it was the Greens who made the charge. Firstly some good work from the Hawick backs sent Craig Russell in for a try before sniper Sean Goodfellow crossed for try number three. Armstrong converted both.

Rory Banks slotted a penalty in the closing stages of the half to close the gap but the Greens now had their tails well and truly up and, with a minute of injury time played, Keith Davies found himself in space five metres out to touch down the bonus point try, Armstrong converted to make the half-time score Selkirk 10 Hawick 28.

A slight reshuffle at half time appeared to have revitalised the Souters who were first to get points on the board after the restart when Yaya Hertzenberg ran in at the posts following a well taken Selkirk lineout with Rory Banks chipping over the simple conversion.

Any hopes of a comeback were short lived however as Hawick gained the momentum once again with Rory Scott running in his second try of the game.

Like in the first half a spell of stalemate occured midway through before a last quarter flurry saw tries for Hawick from Darcy Graham (2), Steven Anderson and Shaun Muir, three converted by Armstrong, and a touchdown also from the battling Souters, scored by Craig MacDougal with Banks converting.
