Ex-Selkirk High School pupil Ciaran Beattie has selected his first Scotland 7s tournament squad as head coach, with the contest due to start tomorrow (Thursday) in Dubai and continue in Cape Town, South Afrcia, from December 13-15.

Beattie has named Robbie Fergusson as captain for the 2019-20 Sevens Series, which runs until the end of May, taking in 10 venues across five continents.

Uncapped Young travels as ‘13th man’, while he and Edinburgh’s Dougie Fife were the only two players not part of the core group announced by Beattie in October.

The highly experienced ex-Melrose duo of Sam Pecqueur and Ross McCann is also in the mix.

Scotland will compete in Pool B of the Dubai event, alongside last year’s finalists USA, Australia and Ireland, who are now core members of the series.

Beattie believes his squad has prepared well for the start of this season’s series, saying: “The effort and application I’ve seen from this group so far has been exemplary.

“They have bought into the way we want to train and approach games, so it’s about putting into place our structures and expressing ourselves to the very best of our ability.”

The full squad for the matches in Dubai and Cape Town is Scott Bickerstaff, Kyle Rowe, Alec Coombes, Robbie Ferguson, Harvey Elms, Tom Brown, Dougie Fife, Femi Sofolarin, Sam Pecqueur, Gavin Lowe, Max McFarland, Ross McCann and Callum Young.

Tomorrow (Thursday) at 1.50pm GMT, Scotland play Australia at the Sevens Stadium in Dubai.

At the same venue, on Friday, they take on the USA at 8.20am GMT, then Ireland at 1.50pm GMT.

Matches on Saturday, December 7 will depend, of course, on the pool games.
