Securing over 30 per cent of the public vote the versatile Hawick full-back received the backing of 20,970 fans.

Hogg was a stand-out performer in Scotland’s improved showing this year, which yielded two victories and, in Dublin on Saturday, he scored arguably the best try of the competition in the first half to put Scotland in the lead.

On Sunday, an expert panel, including Phil Vickery and Gareth Thomas, named a 12-strong list of nominations which were put to the public vote.

Hogg, who made his 43rd appearance in a Scottish shirt during the Championship commented: “I’m honoured to receive the RBS Player of the Championship trophy and join the list of the esteemed players that have won in the past.

“I’m extremely grateful for all the supporters who voted for me.”

Scotland’s Duncan Taylor was also nominated while Champions England had three nominations (Billy Vunipola, Jonathan Joseph and Jack Nowell), Wales two (Gareth Davies, George North), Ireland two (Jonathan Sexton, Conor Murray), France two (Guilhem Guirado, Virimi Vakatawa) and Italy one (Sergio Parisse).
