Rugby: Howe of Fife 15-15 Kelso

The pitch at Cupar had not quite survived the snow, frost and thaw so the game was switched to St Andrews to be played on an all weather 4G pitch at the University.

Kelso were without scrum half, Andy Tait, due to work commitments but Phil Hume deputised and Nico Graaff was set for a man of the match winning debut, with a yellow card being the downside to his performance.

The playing surface was always going to be conducive to fast game and the first half performance by Howe suggested that would be the case and there was a danger of Kelso being out played as they seemed to be continually under pressure. However, the only points in the first half came from a Howe try by Will Wardlaw after a spot of confusion in the Kelso defence.

Howe took the score out to 8-0 at the start of the second half with a penalty by Angus Guthrie but after that, the Kelso performance made spectators wonder why Kelso were languishing at the bottom of the league as they played well and worked at reducing the scoring margin with a penalty by Andrew Skeen followed by a try by Tom Robson. A later try by Arran Jackson successfully converted by Skeen took Kelso into a 15-8 lead.

Howe cleared their lines with a mammoth kick into the corner and from a driven lineout they forced Dylan Groat over for a try. Amazingly, their Guthrie, who had not had a good day with the boot, managed to convert from the touchline.

Howe had one further chance to seal the game when awarded a penalty but the scrum half took a quick tap and the chance was fluffed.

Kelso deserved to come away with the draw. In fact, they have become the score draw experts in the league as for the second season in a row they have recorded three draws in the season.

Another chance to move away from the bottom of the league will come their way next weekend with a home game against Aberdeen, whom Kelso have now overtaken to move up into third from the bottom.
