Rugby: Dalziel looks for positives at Balerno

With still plenty to play for but not much time to get playing Melrose are facing a hectic end to their 2015/16 season.

Weather permitting, and following last weekend’s victory over Hawick, it’s now clear that the Greenyards outfit will travel to Malleny Park on Saturday to play Currie in the BT Cup (3pm) and will play Selkirk in the Premiership at Philiphaugh the following week.

Two defining games that could take John Dalziel’s men into a semi final of the cup and the play-offs.

Currie have had the better of Melrose this season and the Borders club believe they are a due their supporters a performance against them.

“This week will be another big task away to Currie who have been in very good form of late,” said the Melrose coach.

“The cup is high on our priority list and the players will be determined to build on last week with a semi-final place up for grabs.

“We lost out to Curie in the league match a few weeks ago so there will be no need for extra motivation as we look to go and get a positive result.

“They are a good side and we will certainly need to have the same determination shown against Hawick last Saturday. The boys worked very hard on a difficult surface and definitely deserved the win. It was good to finally get a game and Hawick away is always a tough task, so credit to the players for their determined attitude in getting the result we wanted.”

Melrose have a couple of players due for assessment ahead of their trip to Balerno but Dalziel is hopeful of getting a strong squad out again this weekend.

With five games left to play Jed-Forest’s 36-25 bonus point win against Stewart’s Melville keeps Jammie McFarlane’s men in with a chance of reaching the National One play-off spot. They face GHA at Riverside on Saturday.

Elsewhere Hawick have their penultimate league match against Boroughmuir at Mansfield Park, Peebles play host to Howe of Fife and Kelso travel to play Edinburgh Accies.
