£15,000 feature race up next as season goes on for Kelso Racecourse

That race was won 12 months ago by Lucinda Russell’s Well Above Par, and Scotland’s leading jumps trainer has three entries this year in the shape of Caboy, Voix D’Eau and Looks Like Murt.

Blair Campbell has already ridden the last of those three and their partnership was only denied by a neck at Kelso’s early October meeting.

Maurice Barnes saddled his first winner of the campaign at Kelso’s last fixture, and the Cumbrian trainer is looking for more success with Ross Chapman-ridden Bafana Blue in the feature race.

The first race on the card has been named to promote a gofundme.com page raising funds to pay for medical treatment for Jim Beaumont Jnr, the son of Scottish racehorse owner Jim Beaumont.

The Grand National-winning owner’s son lost his right arm in an accident while training on his bicycle, and friends and family are hoping to raise £100,000 to arrange private medical treatment for the fitting of a new prosthetic arm.

Oxnam’s Harriet Graham has earmarked the race for her recent course runner-up Bowderek.

Her stable is in form, having sent out Aye Right, owned by Kelso racecourse director Geoff Adam, to finish third in the Charlie Hall Chase last weekend.

Russell, of Kinross, could have a strong shout in the second race, the Ian Anderson Memorial Chase, with recent Hexham scorer Ain’t My Fault, a close second last year.

Cheshire’s Donald McCain has booked his daughter Abbie to the ride Tawseef, a winning hurdler who hasn’t set foot on a racecourse since finishing third on the flat at Carlisle in August last year in the RacingTV Free Trial Handicap Hurdle over three miles.

Premier D’troice, normally partnered by Brodie Hampton, could be just the second runner ever at Kelso for Lambourn trainer Archie Watson and last year’s easy winner from Hawick, Alistair Whillans’ Court Baloo, is also among the entries.

Northumbrian Rose Dobbin’s recent winners include Le Cheval Noir over hurdles at Carlisle last weekend and also winner of the National Hunt flat race on this programme last year.

She’ll fancy her chances of taking the same race again with Fete Champetre, carrying the colours of Duncan Davidson.
