Borders Hockey Development are gearing up for a summer of fun and have organised a packed programme in May.

First up is the under-15 mixed fun hockey festival which will be held on May 15 at Tweedbank from 2.30-5pm.

Anyone looking to try the game out, as well as current players, can enter a team of six by contacting or letting the Borders Hockey Development Team know whether you would like to join a team.

The big event, the Festival of Hockey, will run over the weekend of May 22-24, beginning with a goalkeepers’ coaching/training session led by Scottish Hockey goalkeeping academy performance coach Graham Stuart on Friday, May 22, from 6-9pm.

On Saturday, May 23 (10am-1pm) there will be a Participation Centre Festival to which all junior club players are invited, followed by the annual awards presentations (1-2pm) when local players, volunteers, coaches and umpires will be recognised for their input over the season.

Following the awards (2-4.30pm) a mixed family fun festival, in which all age groups are invited to participate, will take place.

A mixed club under-14s (9.30am-12.30pm) and a club girls under-16s (1.30-4pm) tournament will round off the weekend on Sunday, May 24. All clubs from the East District are invited to enter teams into these competitions.

There will be catering and fundraising stalls on the day to raise funds to support development activities. Any contributions in the form of raffle prizes or sponsorship of the event will be most welcome.

Then, in what will be a first for the Borders region, there will be the mixed eight-a-side Summer League. This is an opportunity to continue to stay ‘on the ball’ over the summer months or retrieve that stick and trainers from under the stairs or out of the garage and come back to play. Teams can be entered by emailing The 12-week league, which will cost £80 per team to cover pitch costs, starts on Wednesday, May 27. Minimum age is 14 years.
