Masters indeed

Gala Harriers excelled at the annual Scottish National Masters Cross-country Championships held in Kilmarnock last weekend.

Going one better than the previous year, when they were silver medallists, Fiona Dalgleish (8th in 27 minutes 13 seconds), Kate Jenkins (9th/27.20) and Jenny Forbes (10th/27.45) worked superbly well as a group and stormed home in first team position, just one point ahead of Hunters Bog Trotters, who squeezed Edinburgh AC into third place.

And Anya Campbell was an individual silver medallist in the 45+ category with her 25th place in 28.46.

Other runners from the club helped keep the opposition restricted to lower placings and their positions contributed to the final calculations, namely Rachel Fagan (29.00), Fiona Shepherd (29.58) and Dawn Grant (31.39).

As a result of this recent win, Gala female masters are currently champions of six events: East District Cross-country Relay, National Cross-country Relay, East District Cross -country, National Cross-country, National Road Relay and the National Trail Running Championships.

The senior men’s race was no less keenly fought and Gala men secured a very creditable eighth place from 22 teams, with excellent runs from Wayne McIntosh (32.28), Steve Martin (34.10), Dave Moffat (34.35), Rory Campbell (35.21) and Derek Brydon (38.01).
