Kelso Orchard Tennis Club hosted the Hastings 14U Tournament with a great turnout of 15 boys and 10 girls and some excellent tennis on display.
In the boys event, Kelso boys Gregor Welsh and Liam Smillie made the semi-finals, both just missing out on a place in the final to Harris Brogan (Hawick & Wilton Park/Kelso and Alexander Ramage (Melrose) respectively. The final was won by Harris who played some absolutely superb tennis along the way.
Kelso player Archie Mowatt won the consolation event with in a hard fought match beating Hawick’s Daniel Frankland in a match tie break.
In the girls event, there were again some very close and exciting matches with a few going tie breaks.
The final was contested by Zara Elliot (St. Boswells)and Ellen Crawford (Melrose) with the latter showing some fine tennis skills to emerge as winner.
Trophies were presented by Head Coach Lesley Thomas and David Laing who congratulated everyone who took part and thanked helpers, spectators and Hastings & Co for sponsoring the event.
In the inaugural Borders Boys Under 18 league final held at Borders Tennis Centre, Galashiels Kelso Boys beat West Linton 5-1. There were some very close matches played throughout the evening and all credit to the boys from West Linton for the brave fight.
Kelso’s Nik Stingl, Angus Millar, Archie Robertson, John Archbold, were the winners on the night under assistant coach Lee Brown with Angus Thomson unavailable for the final.
Elsewhere Kelso Under 14 Boys played in their league final at Lennel, Coldstream against the Boys from Berwick. On this occasion the Kelso youngsters were beaten by 5-1 by the stronger Berwick team. A few of the matches were very close but Kelso’s number one, Gregor Welsh was the only winner on the night.
