Hockey: Watsonians IV 3-0 Kelso III

This game, for the majority, was played in atrocious conditions and credit to both teams for the way they handled the torrential driving rain and freezing conditions.

Kelso were under pressure from the start from a strong and experienced Watsonians team, who are sitting joint top of East Division Three, but they defended well with Jess Howlett making some great tackles and Gemma Bootman clearing the ball off the line on several occasions. Watsonians finally broke the deadlock, however, to take the half-time score to 1-0.

Kelso battled away in the second half with Linsey Young distributing the ball well from the centre with Rachel Burgher providing good support. Rosie Browne had some great runs deep into the Watsonians half, but she was unable to link with her other strikers, who were well marked well.

Amy Purves on her debut also showed great composure on the ball and received some great passes from Claudia Watson behind her to set up new attacks down the right hand side of the pitch. An unlucky deflection from a defender’s stick at a penalty corner gave Watsonians another goal and they added one more before the full time whistle to complete the final scoreline.
