Double win for Selkirk rider Rachael as racing action returns to Kelso

Rachael McDonald was all smiles after winning on James Ewart-trained 7-1 chance Nikgarde on the first Kelso card of the autumn last week.

The combination saw off short-priced favourite Ruby two by three lengths in the scottishracingacademy.scot Novice’ Hurdle, reports Gordon Brown.

The winning jockey said: “He has improved a lot for his hurdles debut at Hexham.

“It pretty much went to plan and Kelso has always been a lucky track for me.”

McDonald and Ewart later completed a double with Lake Takapuna.

Chapmanshype was a game winner of the featured Great Welfare Auction Handicap Hurdle under Gavin Sheehan.

Trained in Lambourn by Jamie Snowden, the top-weight saw off Weather Front by three-quarters of a length in the £15,000 2m 5f event.

Speaking after his only ride of the day, Sheehan said: “He’s four from four at Fontwell but he’s also won at Ffos Las and now up here.

“I’d say he’d maybe stay three miles but he certainly in great form.

“He went up 10lbs for his last win and he’s still giving away plenty of weight to the second. He’s probably still got a bit of improvement to come and he’s certainly tough and game.”

David Jeffreys, nephew of former Kelso chairman Johnny Jeffries and a trainer based in Gloucestershire, struck with Dubai Outlaw in the second division of the Radio Borders Cash For Kids Handicap Hurdle.

Calliope continued her excellent run of form when landing the the opening division of Radio Borders Cash For Kids Handicap Hurdle.
