Borders schools XC Championships deferred for a week

The weather forecast for most of the next 24 hours has regrettably led to a decision to postpone the Borders Schools Cross-Country Championships from tomorrow (Thursday) until the first stand-by date of next Thursday, March 19.

There is a yellow warning for snow and ice through Wednesday night and Thursday morning, explained the area’s athletics co-ordinator, Gregor Nicholson.

“While it currently looks like it will be fair in Galashiels come Thursday morning, there is a risk there could be snow lying on the course,” he added.

“The strong winds will keep the wind-chill factor below freezing through the morning and they also add to the unpredictability of the forecast. Gusts of over 40mph for Thursday morning also present a risk for the gazebos, which are essential for the event management.

“The forecast for next week looks very settled and mild.

“All told, therefore, we have felt it best to postpone now, giving good notice, rather than risk deteriorating weather and a last-minute postponement on Thursday morning.”

All entries were still valid, said Mr Nicholson, adding that any schools who were unable to enter for tomorrow, and who wished a late entry for March 19, should email [email protected] no later than this coming Monday, March 16.
