Multi-sport taster for Jedburgh

JEDBURGH will host a new multi-sport taster event next month, aimed at Borders adults with learning disabilities who have never experienced sport or struggle to unearth opportunities.

To be held on Saturday, October 29, from 10am to noon, the event will feature seven sports – rugby, football, athletics, tennis, badminton, boccia and new-age curling – with plans to continue the involvement through 2011-12.

Run by the Scottish Borders Disability Sports Group (SBDSG), supported by partners Scottish Disability Sport and Borders Sport and Leisure Trust, the two-hour event will have specialist coaches and support volunteers trained in working with people with disabilities, and friends and family are also very welcome.

SBDSG chairman David Ferguson said: “The idea is to try and turn more people on to the enjoyment and benefits of sport with a variety to try in a safe, relaxed and fun atmosphere.

“We have good schools events growing in the Borders so this is aimed at adults aged over 16 and we won’t discriminate against any 90-year-olds wanting a shot either.

“Our intention is to take the feedback from the taster event and then link people who want to continue their involvement in sport with local coaches and clubs through the rest of 2011-12.

“We are committed to developing stronger links across the Borders community and creating more opportunities for people with sensory, physical and learning disabilities to enjoy and benefit from sport.

“For this event, we are appealing for anyone with learning disabilities, or who know of people who might benefit, to get in touch and come and have some fun. Judging by past events, for some it will just be a great day out, and for others it will lead to something more regular and competitions.”

The event takes place the day before the popular Jed 10K Wheelchair and Hand-Cycle Races which has attracted new sponsorship and more entrants, and will again be supported by Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson.
