Young southern tennis players in sizzling form

Border junior tennis players have had a fantastic summer, competing in tournaments around the country. July proved to be the busiest month for the region's top players, with the biggest competitions running, and there were some superb results.

Adam Clunie and Ailsa Clark (both pictured) reached the U12 Boys and Girls singles finals of one of the world’s oldest tennis tournaments, the South of Scotland Tennis Championships, staged in Moffat. Both had to beat top opposition in their age groups nationally to reach the finals.

Additionally, there have been several other excellent results from juniors who mostly train at the Borders Tennis Centre in Galashiels, alongside their club programmes:

Harris Brogan – East Lothian U16 Boys Singles runner-up and Dunfermline Junior Open U18 Boys Singles runner-up. Adam Clunie – Dunfermline Junior Open U12 Boys Singles winner.

Ivan Burt-Smith – Clywd Junior Open U14 Boys Singles runner-up and Boys Doubles winner.

Annique Varty – South of Scotland Open Championships U14 Girls Singles third place. Indie Lucas – Dunfermline Junior Open U14 Girls Singles runner-up and Ponteland Junior Open U14 Girls Singles third place.

Lachlan Ferguson – Dunfermline Junior Open U14 Boys Singles runner-up.

Olivia Richards – third in East Lothian Open U9 Girls Singles.

Louis Kirkpatrick – Dunfermline Junior Open U10 Boys Singles winner and East Lothian U10 Boys Singles third place.

Ruby Mackenzie – Dunfermline Junior Open U10 Girls Singles third place.

Jonny Adamson, Borders Tennis district coach, said: “We’re really proud to see so many kids going out and playing these tournaments. They train over winter in outdoor facilities, in all weather, and the summer is the big competition period for them.

“The results have been nothing short of incredible. We have more players winning more matches at each level and some who are breaking new ground by reaching and winning finals. It’s great to see the Borders making a name for itself at junior level in Scottish tennis.”
