Three young Judoka from Focus Judo Club in Galashiels travelled up to the Ravenscraig Regional sports facility, near Motherwell, for the Scottish National Closed Championships.

Accompanied by senior coaches Tam Hardie and Stuart Gordon were 11-year-olds Holly Shepherd and Ewan Jones, and 16-year-old Monica Riddell.

Ewan fought in a very competitive weight category and did very well to secure a bronze medal for himself.

Holly also fought very tough opposition to secure the clubs’ second bronze medal and Monica did exceptionally well, fighting in a pool against higher-graded players, and earning a well-deserved bronze medal – Focus Judo’s third medal over the two day event.

Senior coach Tam Hardie told The Southern: “We are starting to have some good success from our competitive players.

“This is all down to the hard work and dedication put in from all our coaches week after week, and also from our equally-dedicated players like Ewan, Holly and Monica.

“We hope to keep on attending events of this level and plan to introduce more of our competitive players to this calibre of competition over the next year.”

Judo on the whole has been brought under the spotlight due to success of Scottish and British players in the 2012 Olympics and, more recently, in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and is experiencing an increase in popularity due to this. If you, or your child would like to try the sport then you can find Tam, Stuart, James and Lee at the Focus Centre every Monday night from 6pm onwards.
