ST BOSWELLS Tennis Club’s first team kicked off the 2011 season with victory over Kelso in the winter league on Sunday.
The team of Simon Blair, Adam Drummond, Toni Lemmon and Lynn Bruce produced a confident display that bodes well for the rest of the year, securing a 4-0 victory.
The visiting Kelso side produced some good tennis throughout the afternoon, and Lesley Thomas and Lee Brown forced their mixed match to a tie-break against Blair and Lemmon, just going down 10-7.
Alice Miller and Calum Woodcock also showed some early season form against Drummond and Bruce, although the 6-2 6-2 scoreline did them few favours.
St Boswells’ second team did not fare so well away to Duns 1 in the other winter league group.
Always likely to be a tough match, a strong Duns side won 4-0 despite the best efforts of the Villagers’ Hilary Jackson, Ailsa Jackson, Chris Smith and Charles Strang.
Despite the defeat, the St Boswells second string will hope to challenge for a semi-final spot, having got a match against one of the strongest teams in the group out of the way early on.
This Sunday, St Boswells I take on Selkirk, with the seconds facing an away trip to play Melrose II.
