SATURDAY saw the culmination of the Borders Junior Cricket 2011 season with the final of the Under-15 20/20 Cup.
The weather, like most of the summer this year, was gloomy and damp as Kelso/Manderston and Gala played out the match on a spongy wicket at Meigle Park.
As in previous encounters the game was a close one with one or two crucial moments separating the teams.
Gala won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Galbraith and Thomson opened the innings and steadily accumulated 22 runs over the first seven overs before Thomson was caught by Irvine off Halls.
Equally steady bowling by Pringle, Irvine and Moir ensured that Kelso/Manderston were restricted in their run accumulation. An unbeaten 50 from Galbraith with able support from Mark Henderson (6), and a typically swashbuckling Roberts (31 not out) meant that Kelso finished on 104-2 after 20 overs.
Gala then came in to bat with Halls and Hancock opening, the former quickly departing to a good catch by Palmer.
Irvine then set about the Kelso bowlers and added a quickfire 30 runs with Hancock to put Gala back on track. But good fielding and bowling from Kelso, including a runout by Grindell with a throw from the boundary, meant that the Braw Lads were steadily losing wickets.
The loss of Irvine when he was on 19, bowled by Davidson, who went on to take a further two wickets, was a turning point in the game.
Further wickets from Grindell, Davidson and Palmer ensured that Gala ended on 62-9 off their 20 overs with Kelso winning by 42 runs.
