TWEEDBANK seniors travelled up to the Midlothian stadium in Dalkeith last week for their Scottish Cup preliminary round tie against near neighbours Teviotdale.
A close match was expected, Teviotdale having already beaten the Tweedbank men’s team. In the senior league, honours had been even with both teams gaining a win at home.
The first 10 ends were tight with the lead changing hands three times in the evenly-balanced encounter.
In the next five ends, though, Tweedbank managed to apply some pressure, increasing their lead to 11 shots with just a maximum of eight ends left to play.
The Tweedbank team not only kept ahead, but finished the stronger side, finally winning by a margin of 23 shots.
It had been a good all-round performance by Tweedbank, the highest up of three winning rinks being Billy Nisbet, Jim Redpath, Danny McLean and Rob Fulton.
In this week’s first round, the Borderers will face a team from Stirling at the East Lothian stadium at Meadowmill.
In the ladies’ Scottish Cup, their reward for an excellent win in the preliminary round was a trip to Stirling to play a team from East Fife.
Facing a strong team on a carpet which the Tweedbank ladies had no experience of the result was a loss. However, after a difficult season in the league, they can be pleased with their achievement.
At club level, the Afternoon League Cup final will be played today at 2pm, while tomorrow there is the Valentine’s game, starting at 10am.
Also tomorrow, there are the semi-finals of the ladies’ and gents’ singles, starting at 7pm.
One ladies’ semi-final has, however, already taken place, resulting in victory for Gail Lindores against Betty Johnstone. In the final, she will meet Christine Miller or Jackie Ormiston.
The draws for all categories of senior competitions for gents have now been made and these will be on the noticeboards shortly.
