Thriller sees Gala lose first match

Kelso beat Gala by 12 runs

GALA were back in action for the first time since June 12, but unfortunately suffered their first defeat of the season, going down to Kelso at Shedden Park.

Batting first, the home side made a solid start, with Mark Chester and Steven Patterson providing the early impetus after Graeme Ormiston had picked up two wickets in his opening spell.

Kelso looked set to launch with 83 on the board with seven overs left and eight wickets in hand, but the Gala bowling and fielding kept the home side down to 39 runs from those last seven overs with Josh Irvine picking up three wickets for 18 runs, as Kelso finished their 20 overs on 122 for six. In reply, Gala were falling behind the asking rate when they lost Ormiston to a mix-up with his opening partner, but Duncan Millar and Irvine built a good partnership to keep the visitors in contention.

Just when the pair looked to launch towards their target, Irvine was trapped lbw by Patterson for a run-a-ball 20.

Needing nine runs an over, the incoming Gala batsmen struggled to give Millar the support he needed in the fading light and their hopes finally ended when the makeshift opener went for a fine 62, looking to launch Chester to the short leg side boundary, as Gala finished on 110 for 5.
