Hawick Boxing Club is set to hold an evening of top-flight amateur boxing at Mansfield Park next month, which will feature several elite Scottish competitors.

The Hawick lads have been training hard since they returned from their summer break and have been travelling to several other clubs for sparring.

Also on the bill are several boxers from the Gala club, as well as pugilists from outfits south of the border.

The last show at Mansfield in April was a huge sell-out success and, according to coach Colin Purvis, the public in the region always show great support for boxing.

Speaking to The Southern this week, Purvis said: “We are expecting another great night.

“Fellow coach Gareth Walker has started the match making and already has several top bouts lined up.

“It’s also great to have lads on from Gala too. There’s always going to be a bit of rivalry there, but it’s all healthy and good for the sport in the Borders.

“This will provide our lads with a great opportunity to once again showcase their talents in front of their home crowd and will be a good building block for the first half of the season with the novice championships in October and the intermediate competition just after the new year.”

The Hawick club will be represented by currently unbeaten Scottish light welterweight champion Jack Purvis, former Eastern district champions Macauly Walker and Connor Sutherland, as well as heavyweights Tom Robson and Sean Allison.

The club is also hoping to debut a couple of lads and, commenting on this, Walker said: “The lads have been working hard in the gym, we have been travelling for sparring and they will now concentrate on fine tuning and sharpness.

And he added: “It’s always a pleasure to bring other clubs to the town and we are looking forward to it.”

And Walker added: “We always have great support at our shows and our sponsors are always generous and committed.

“The last show was a sell-out and tickets are on sale this week and will go quickly.”

Tickets for the Mansfield Park event go on sale this week priced £10 adult and £5 under-16, and can be obtained by contacting Gareth Walker on 07834 739994 or Colin Purvis on 01450 218417.
