Talented young players strut their stuff at Tweedbank

On Sunday, 100 of the region’s most talented under 15-year-old boys and girls hockey players took to the tiger turf at Tweedbank for an inter-squad development tournament.

The event was the conclusion of the first eight-week block of training sessions delivered across three Regional Centre’s, East (Berwickshire, Eyemouth and Kelso), South (Jedburgh, Selkirk and Hawick) and West (Peebles, Earlston and Galashiels).

Each centre was comprised of two development groups which consisted of players who demonstrated Scottish/Borders Hockey Development’s core values which are trainability, technical ability, required movement patterns, work ethic and positive attitude. Development squad One consisted of those who showed more advanced attributes whilst Development squad Two consisted of emerging talent.

The tournament was played in glorious sunshine and the level of hockey on display was excellent.

The Borders Hockey Development Group (BHDG) also used the event as a fundraiser offering refreshments and tombola in the Tweedbank Hub. As a result of parent contributions in home baking/prizes and the organisational skills of Lindsey Forster, Lesley Bell and Jane Walker, a fantastic sum of £495 was raised, which will go a long way in supporting the continuing success of the group.

The BHDG wish to thank all players, parents, umpires and junior helpers for making the afternoon so successful.

The Development squads will recommence the second block of sessions in February where the focus will be on developing players in preparation for the U14 Boys and U14 Girls Inter-District Tournaments.
