Selkirk’s hopes of starting their Division Three campaign with victory were halted by an incredible bowling performance by Royal High Corstorphine’s Gus Hoffman.
He took seven wickets for just nine runs to thwart any chances of a Selkirk win, as the Souters were bundled out for just 54 at Royal High to lose by 128 runs.
Earlier, the hosts had made 182 for 7 wickets from their 45 overs after the Borderers decided to field first.
Cox top-scored for RHC with 43 and Kelly added 37, while Kenny Paterson continues to be one of Selkirk’s top performers as he took two wickets for the concession of just nine runs from his nine overs.
Greg Fenton was more expensive with 1 for 46, while John Everitt claimed two for 50, with two runouts making up the other wickets to fall.
In response, Selkirk were in trouble soon as Everitt was bowled by Lawrie for just five.
Skipper Rory Banks came to the crease and started to build a partnership with Fenton.
But when the pair departed for 12 and 18 respectively, it looked an uphill task for Selkirk. And so it proved, with no other batsman able to get into double figures as Hoffman claimed his seven wickets, Lawrie ending with a score of 3 for 13.
Selkirk were all out after just 22.2 overs, and will be hoping for an improved performance this weekend at home to Carlton 3rds.
