Something fishy about young Struan’s first win

IT had to happen sooner or later. One of the young pretenders was bound to come of age – and so it happened on Sunday when junior gun, Struan Brodie, pulled out all the stops to win the Lingerwood Cup and earn his Braidwood Green Hat, four points clear of nearest rival, his dad Jim.

Given the beautiful clear morning, Jim Black set an interesting if slightly testing course for the first layout including a completely new “rabbit” target. By the time shooting started the level of difficulty was added to by a surprisingly chilly wind that belied the early sun.

All that didn’t deter the Denholm youth. It transpired later that his older sister had promised to buy him fish and chips for tea if he won – so he did!

Brodie Junior didn’t fare so well on the second layout, dropping mid-field. This time honours fell to regular visitor Bobby Bruce (Broxburn).

The next competition is on Sunday, March 13, as Jack Carlyle (Dalton) attempts to defend the Gamekeeper Statue he won last year.

Juniors also have the Shield to contest – last won by Struan at the 2010 Christmas event.
